BMR vs TDEE

Two numbers every person interested in nutrition should understand: BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) and TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). They're related but serve very different purposes.

Basal Metabolic Rate

The calories your body burns at complete rest to keep you alive — breathing, circulation, cell repair. Think of it as your body's "minimum operating cost."

The Relationship

TDEE = BMR × Activity Multiplier

Your TDEE is always higher than your BMR (unless you're completely sedentary and even then, TEF adds to it). The activity multiplier bridges the gap.

  • Use TDEE to set your actual calorie targets for weight loss, maintenance, or gain. This is the number that matters for nutrition planning.

The difference between BMR and TDEE can be dramatic. A sedentary office worker might have a TDEE only 20% above their BMR, while a competitive athlete could have a TDEE 90% above their BMR.
